    Micro-scale inductorless maximum power point tracking DC-DC converter

    In this study, the authors propose a simple maximum power point tracking (MPPT) DC-DC converter amenable for micro-scale photovoltaic applications. The solution avoids the use of inductors and exploits a charge pump as a voltage boost element. To take into account the temperature dependence of the MPP voltage, a passive temperature compensation circuit is also included. To validate the idea a prototype was realised with commercial off-the-shelf components. A system efficiency better than 83% for output power above 90 mW is obtained. The results show the viability of the proposed approach which could be further improved through a full custom integrated-circuit design

    0.13-µm CMOS tunable transconductor based on the body-driven gain boosting technique with application in Gm-C filters

    We present a low-voltage low-power CMOS tunable transconductor exploiting body gain boosting to increase the small-signal output resistance. As a distinctive feature, the proposed scheme allows the OTA transconductance to be tuned via the current biasing the gain-boosting circuit. The proposed transconductor has been designed in a 0.13-µm CMOS technology and powered from a 1.2-V supply. To show a possible application, a 0.5-MHz tunable third order Chebyshev low pass filter suitable for the Ultra Low Power Bluetooth Standard has been designed. The filter simulations show that all the requirements of the chosen standard are met, with good performance in terms of linearity, noise and power consumption

    Gene expression and pathway bioinformatics analysis detect a potential predictive value of MAP3K8 in thyroid cancer progression

    Thyroid cancer is the commonest endocrine malignancy. Mutation in the BRAF serine/threonine kinase is the most frequent genetic alteration in thyroid cancer. Target therapy for advanced and poorly differentiated thyroid carcinomas include BRAF pathway inhibitors. Here, we evaluated the role of MAP3K8 expression as a potential driver of resistance to BRAF inhibition in thyroid cancer. By analyzing Gene Expression Omnibus data repository, across all thyroid cancer histotypes, we found that MAP3K8 is up-regulated in poorly differentiated thyroid carcinomas and its expression is related to a stem cell like phenotype and a poorer prognosis and survival. Taken together these data unravel a novel mechanism for thyroid cancer progression and chemo-resistance and confirm previous results obtained in cultured thyroid cancer stem cellsComment: 5 page

    Sub-Femto-Farad Resolution Electronic Interfaces for Integrated Capacitive Sensors: A Review

    Capacitance detection is a universal transduction mechanism used in a wide variety of sensors and applications. It requires an electronic front-end converting the capacitance variation into another more convenient physical variable, ultimately determining the performance of the whole sensor. In this paper we present a comprehensive review of the different signal conditioning front-end topologies targeted in particular at sub-femtofarad resolution. Main design equations and analysis of the limits due to noise are reported in order to provide the designer with guidelines for choosing the most suitable topology according to the main design specifications, namely energy consumption, area occupation, measuring time and resolution. A data-driven comparison of the different solutions in literature is also carried out revealing that resolution, measuring time, area occupation and energy/conversion lower than 100 aF, 1 ms 0.1 mm2, and 100 pJ/conv. can be obtained by capacitance to digital topologies, which therefore allow to get the best compromise among all design specifications

    A new enhanced PSPICE implementation of the equivalent circuit model of SiPM detectors

    The present work proposes an improved PSPICE implementation of the equivalent electrical model of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) to simulate and predict their transient re-sponse to avalanche trigger events. In particular, the developed model provides a detailed investigation of magnitude and timing of the read-out signals and can therefore be exploited to perform reliable circuit-level simulations. The modeling approach used is strictly related to the physics of each basic microcell constituting the SiPM device, and allows the avalanche timing as well as the photodiode current and voltage to be accurately simulated. Predictive capabilities of the proposed model are demonstrated by means of experimental measurements on a real detector. Versatility of the proposed model is also confirmed

    A Genetic and Metabolic Staging System for Predicting the Outcome of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

    Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an emerging cause of liver-related events (LREs). Here, we have assessed the ability of a composite score based on clinical features, metabolic comorbidities, and genetic variants to predict LREs. A total of 546 consecutive patients with NAFLD were recruited and stratified according to the fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index. LREs were defined as occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma or hepatic decompensation. Cox regression multivariate analysis was used to identify baseline variables associated with LREs. The UK Biobank was used as the validation cohort, and severe liver disease (incidence of cirrhosis, decompensated liver disease, hepatocellular carcinoma, and/or liver transplantation) was used as the outcome. LREs were experienced by 58 patients, only one of whom was in the cohort of patients with a FIB-4 score < 1.3. Multivariate Cox regression analysis of 229 patients with a FIB-4 score ≥ 1.3 highlighted clinical variables independently associated with the development of LREs, including older age, low platelet count, low albumin, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, certain genetic factors, and interactions between genetic factors and sex or diabetes. The area under the curve (AUC) for the model was 0.87 at 1, 3, and 5 years. Our novel Genetic and Metabolic Staging (GEMS) scoring system was derived from the Cox model linear predictor, ranked from 0 to 10, and categorized into five classes (0-5, 5-6, 6-7, 7-8, and 8-10). The risk of LREs increased from 4% in patients in the best class (GEMS score 0-5) to 91% in the worst (GEMS score 8-10). GEMS score was associated with incident severe liver disease in the study population (hazard ratio, 1.56; 95% confidence interval, 1.48-1.65; P < 0.001) as well as in the UK Biobank cohort where AUCs for prediction of severe liver disease at 1, 3, and 5 years were 0.70, 0.69, and 0.67, respectively. Conclusion: The novel GEMS scoring system has an adequate ability to predict the outcome of patients with NAFLD

    Post-stroke aphasia at the time of COVID-19 pandemic: a telerehabilitation perspective

    We report on our remote speech therapy experience in post-stroke aphasia. The aim was to test the feasibility and utility of telerehabilitation to support future randomized controlled trials. Post-stroke aphasia is a common and disabling speech disorder, which significantly affects patients' and caregivers' health and quality of life. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, most of the conventional speech therapy approaches had to stop or "switch" into telerehabilitation procedures to ensure the safety of patients and operators but, concomitantly, the best rehabilitation level possible. Here, we planned a 5-month telespeech therapy programme, twice per week, of a patient with non-fluent aphasia following an intracerebral haemorrhage. Overall, treatment adherence based on the operator's assessments was high, and incomplete adherence for technical problems occurred very rarely. In line with the patient's feedback, acceptability was also positive, since he was constantly motivated during the sessions and the exercises performed autonomously, as confirmed by the speech therapist and caregiver, respectively. Moreover, despite the sequelae from the cerebrovascular event, evident in some writing tests due to the motor deficits in his right arm and the disadvantages typical of all telepractices, more relevant results were achieved during the telerehabilitation period compared to those of the "face-to-face" therapy before the COVID-19 outbreak. The telespeech therapy performed can be considered successful and the patient was able to return to work. Concluding, we support it as a feasible approach offering patients and their families the opportunity to continue the speech and language rehabilitation pathway, even at the time of pandemic
